Abstract

Supermarkets are capable of retrofits with remodeling expansions using existing infrastructure. However, most are not sustainable. The application of daylighting offers these reuse projects three equally significant benefits. First, the daylighting system enhances the shopper’s experience. Second, it offers the supermarket reduced economic costs. Third, this technique enhances environmental benefits by reducing energy loads. Because this case study is in Rochester, New York both the local climate and visiting hours of the buildings factor into the daylight design practices. The objective of the thesis is to propose a re-design of an existing supermarket by testing the light quality with Illuminance Rendering in Revit to create a physical representation of how a supermarket will benefit from daylighting as well as quantitative data on daylight illumination. The model must also accommodate the existing structure with the appropriate amount of daylight to the supermarket’s location, factoring in the climate of Rochester and orientation to the sun. Other factors to be considered are the physical models of light-admitting design that is evaluated in terms of aesthetics, light levels, and energy efficiency. It is equally important that the chosen physical model involves the best possible combination of daylighting and artificial lighting for the supermarket.
