Abstract

A method is described for measuring the RMS granularity of black and white photographic materials at a diffuse density of 1.0 using a visual comparison technique. A set of standard granularity patches was prepared for use with a comparison microscope. Samples with known values of RMS granularity were evaluated by observers and it was found that the observer -measured values of granularity correlated well with the actual values of granularity. Some discrepancies from the expected relationship between observer-measured values and actual values are discussed.
